What I want is a big glass sphere with an open bottom and a bowl on top, essentially a gravity bong that you can swim up under and stick your head in and get uber baked astronaut-style. Nice.

Good call on the glass sphere, that would be awesome.
Glass might be too heavy.. is it meant to sit on some floaters? That would be pretty awesome.
One problem I see is that when you put your head into the sphere, you'll displace a volume of matter equal to the volume of your head!
I guess if the bong was completely sealed (except the port for your head, where the water is) and there was enough water coming up through the bottom before you put your head in so that all you displaced was water, then it could work pretty well!
The other problem I see is that if you start to cough, you'll probably end up drowning and needing your buddies to rescue you :P
