Mandatory Intellectual Self-Defence Courses for World Citizens

Alright, I've been brooding on this one for a while: basically, in our technologically advanced era, it is taken as a given that anyone can't know everything, therefore professions and knowledge are increasinly spread out, resulting in a population of workers who know everything about one particular field of expertise but are really deficient in terms of general knowledge. Yet come election time, everyone is expected to make an "informed" choice between political candidates, but how many people really know anything about actual policies, let alone the "hidden" relations between the state and e.g. major corporations?

Everything in our culture gets reduced into meaningless advertisements suggesting citizens perform action X - "vote Republican," "Buy this or that brand" - which, I'm afraid to say, has nothing to do with real liberal democratic choice or individual freedom, but is it's opposite: top down coersion.

Very few people realize that their opinions and sentiments are anything but spontaneous, but rather, like the drivel passing for "culture" in these times, the product of deliberate concensus engineering programs. "So what?" you say? Exactemundo!

I therefore propose mandatory high school level courses in cultural awareness, in which students are given a general, honest sketch of the
intellectual playing field, with special attention to tensions between corporate interests and those of "ordinary people."

Nothing short of revolutionizing the educational system, in other words.

i.love.you for that

there is nothing democratic about a mandatory "anything". true liberty is the freedom to choose whatever you want. think a market economy. in that, people are expected to choose their lives based on informed decisions. that is the way to prosperity, kind of like 'the american dream' if you will. if people are driven, they can become informed, intelligent, and prosperous. based on their actions alone, nothing to do with race/religion/country. because if there are no groups like "republicans", "democrats", "niggers", there will be no taking sides, no descrimination, based on anything other than logic. you would only "take sides" or "discriminate", really, by fairly choosing the party in a choice-driven event that most helps you to attain your ends. austrian economics, comes out when i'm high. apologies.

basically i disagree with the idea of mandating anything, control, etc. so i can't say i like the idea from a philosophical standpoint, but since society will likely never be like what i said above, the whole people being more informed is a pretty good idea.

Mandatory is a strong word, but there's no reason not to push for stronger logic education in high schools, there does really seam to be a void in the topics we were taught in high school.
