i've been wondering this for about the last 4 years... I'm guessing it's supposed to be a mystery though, I always assumed it was just part of their marketing :P
All you have to do is look at the logo. The P E T is red and SMART is blue, therefore the break down of PetSmart is Pet and Smart not Pets and Mart. Solved.
