I learned all this stuff in my intro to word class

Thu, 10/13/2011 - 12:04am
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 11:44am

because apart from preventing the typewriter from jamming, they made the keyboard so typewriter would be on the top row and you could type it really fast.

Thu, 10/13/2011 - 2:57am

just so when people first got them they'd have no trouble writing letters to people about their new typewriters.

Wed, 10/12/2011 - 11:57am

heres another fun fact for ya:
Stewardesses is the longest word you can type using only your left hand, assuming you actually type how people tried to teach you...i just free hand it

Wed, 10/12/2011 - 12:36pm

it was also to prevent carpel tunnel in the wrist

Tue, 10/11/2011 - 6:09pm

Correct. they purposely spaced the most used letters apart to avoid people typing too fast, which would cause the typewriter to jam

Tue, 10/11/2011 - 8:16pm
LazyNate Says:

i like to think that they put all the letters and numbers and symbols into a cup, shook it up real good, then proceeded to throw the cup at a computer and they just so happend to land in the places you see now. . .except for esc. . . that ones bull shit. they made that one up.

Wed, 10/12/2011 - 1:39pm

But according to Wheel Of Fortune the most common letters are R, S, T, L, N, and E and R, S, T, and E are all adjacent!

Wed, 10/12/2011 - 5:33pm

No they didn't they just put them in a different order to stop typewriter jam cuz before it was just alphabetical (fun fact the people who made the new keyboards called it the qwerty layout)

Mon, 09/26/2011 - 3:05pm

hmm, seems simple enough. thanks for the response dude :)

Tue, 10/11/2011 - 1:07pm

Tue, 10/11/2011 - 8:53pm

its interesting but stop fixing things that arent broken

Wed, 10/12/2011 - 9:30am

Yes. They call it 'an improvement',
However, the first few people to actually use it,
Are going to be screwed for like the first two months, trying to get a 'hang of it'.
I call that, my friend, more of an 'inconvenience' than anything.

lol I actually know this one:D!
They based it on the keys you use the most often, and what words usually put those letters together, and how common those words are lol

M.Clean Says:

Yeah when they started marketing typewriters to consumers they needed a demonstration of how fast and efficient their product was so to do this they would spell out "typewriter" as fast as possible (which was made possible by putting all the letters in the top row). People were blown the fuck away and never really questioned the layout lolz

Tue, 10/11/2011 - 9:11pm

i wrote highdea about that.... along time ago..
i guess you are just lucky :)

Tue, 10/11/2011 - 9:41pm

well.. i can answer part of that question. the top row on the keyboard (QWERTY UIOP) is actually the guys name that invented the keyboard! He signed his fuckin name on it! LOL
