The stars that we see in the night sky are so far away from us that were forced to use lightyears as a measurement of distance instead of miles like we do for things on earth. The fact that we can see things that are so far away from us that we needed an entirely different unit of measurement to put a number on it is incredible. We can't see across a little tiny ocean (compared to the distance of earth and even the closest star) but we can see stars that are a few thousand light years away. it would take us around 38,000 years using our fastest ship available to just travel ONE lightyear. if i live to be an average of 75 i could live and die roughly 2026 times in the time it would take me to travel to the closest star to us. I cant imagine something being so bright that its light can be seen from planets hundreds of thousands of years away from us. I bet you cant see earth from those stars...

WHOA! i agree with everything except the ocean comment. earth is round, and perspective in linear. thats why we can't see across the ocean. but other than that, Awesome, ill plus 1 to that!

Space doesn't have a bunch of molecules and matter reflecting the light so It can pretty much travel infinitely, that's why our sky is blue, the light reflecting off the molecules in our atmosphere, hence why you can't see into space during the day, but I'm not a scientist, I can't even do fractions

it makes you think. but here is something to think how many "beings" are out there looking up at us wondering the same thing?

blows your mind that something out there...alive and just building their existence like we are. wondering the same things we are..

or maybe they already know?

Fri, 10/28/2011 - 7:51am Says:

And just think, they might not even still be in the building stages of their civilization and be incredibly more knowledgable, and technologically advanced. We have no idea how long other shit has existed in the universe that we haven't discovered!

Fri, 10/28/2011 - 4:16pm

its fucking mind boggling specially if you think about this shit while looking at the stars smoking a fat joint to yourself!

Tue, 10/11/2011 - 10:05pm

hmmm i didnt even think of that. The thought of why we can see stars but not across far distances like the ocean is what inspired this highdea. Thanks for answering my question

Dude I recently watched a movie called "Sunshine" and it was about mankinds last ditch effort to save the sun, and it shows you some killer theories about how humans would survive super long distance space travel and just how powerful the sun really is it was really trippy definitely worth a watch

you cant see across the ocean because the earth is circular. stars from our planet are straight away

What I think that craziest thing is that the light your seeing from those stars are really hundreds of years old.

I got something crazier; Since some of those stars are thousands of light years away, you might be looking at stars that have already blown up. You're seeing history, man.

i think about things like this all day. how insignificant we are in the big picture is amazing to me, and yet we still manage to fill our lives with unnecessary problems like finances (which are completely artificial) and drama in our relationships. we need to understand how short our time here really is and make the best of it.

Thu, 10/27/2011 - 10:06pm

i agree with that humblefishstix. Whenever im angry at a person over something really insignificant i always think how its not worth it for me to waste my time being angry or upset. Time just keeps going and no matter how angry i let myself become i know ill eventually get over it. All that comes from drama are things that you end up regretting later

Fantastic musings good sir. I have another for you.

If you took a ship and it reanimated you every time you died, you still would not make it to that star first from our planet, even in our fastest ship. Eventually someone would invent a much faster ship and they would pass you like you were standing still. You would be reincarnated thousands of times over watching all the other people zip progressively faster leaving you secluded in your ship watching humanity pass you by. Some adventure.

Thu, 10/27/2011 - 11:30pm

Thats an interesting point sephsuperior. eventually in the time it would take a ship to get to the closest star right now the world will probably have advanced technologically in ways we could never dream of. The progression we've made in the last 100 years alone is incredible. Its entirely possible that by the time the first ship will of gotten to that star that we could of been there, explored, possibly killed the locals and colonized, and left to go back to earth

Thu, 10/27/2011 - 11:37pm

And I will most certainly toke to that.
Thinking you are the first human, after so long traveling, you arrive to find.......... a starbucks.

The craziest thing about stars is that the star were looking at is actually many years ago that it was. So like since the star Serious is 8.6 lightyears away from us, were looking at that star as it was 8.6 years ago. It takes the light that shoots from the star that long just so it can get to us for a mere second. Astronomy might be the craziest thing to listen and learn about while high. That's what I do when I go to that class at school :)

I dont think it is infinately large, cause its still expanding from the big bang, and then its gonna start going back in again i think.

Yeahhhh I'm gonna post this on every astronomy highdea I come across.

I was baffled the first time I calculated how far away the nearest star is in miles. Enough to travel around the earth a few hundred million times, iirc.

But this shit here, this gives you an actual 3D simulation. You have no idea how vast space really is until you see it simulated.

similar to this, just to get an idea of how insignificant we are, watch this shit:
keep looking back and try to still see how small our sun is, and THEN remember how big our sun is compared to us!
