Why do we even use cents at all? Why not just have everything an even dollar amount. Everything would be simpler. They are complaining about expensive it is getting to make all the coins, so just stop!

What will we do with the tons of coins already out there? IDGAF, melt that shit down and make other stuff out of it.

See! It will also create jobs. Seems like common 'cents' to me.

it costs 2.41 cents to manufacture a single penny, and 4.9 billion pennies were produced last year, meaning over 100 million dollars is spent just last year to make pennies. and with the rising cost the metals it takes to make a penny (zinc & copper), the cost is only going to rise.

what about gas prices and other products where a specific amount is necessary?

i saw we go back to gold that actually has value and stop depending on paper money which in reality has no more value than the stuff i wipe my ass with.

Gold has no real value, just the value we associate with it because we think it is rare and looks pretty.

Gold prices are changing all the time, look at stock in gold. Currency is assigned a value based on an international system. I think it's kind of cool that we don't have to have something physical to back up what our money is worth.

no other country in the world is on the gold standard. why would we be? there are no benefits. plus, the rising value of the dollar would prevent us from being as competitive in a global market. china actually holds up our dollar by buying up our debt; they do this so their products can be sold cheaper than ours. i'm sure you're a ron paul fan/ libertarian, because he pushes this for some reason. i like ron paul but...he's not as intelligent as you think. he wants to legalize though, so good for him.

Tons of businesses buy and sell things for less than $1. They would have to make bills to replace the coins.

AN ANSWER TO THE QUESTION AS TO WHY DO WE USE CENTS: tax. The government can't charge a 100% tax on something only costing $1. People would go berserk! "But hagrid, not EVERYTHING would be taxed 100%!!!" Ok, then how could a tax system possibly be created to determine the right amount of tax for every little thing people buy, and keep it in dollar increments?

Great highdea, I wish it could be true! But unfortunately it's just not realistic

thats sort of how it is in europe. something costs one euro, you give the guy a one euro coin and you're good. they also have 2 euro coins which are surprisingly convenient. the way america does money is almost as ridiculous as its marijuana laws.

Here, pennies are being phased out. Makes sense. We're also getting cool plastic-y money that's impossible to rip. apparently the $100 bills smell like maple syrup, but I wouldn't know because I'm not ballin enough to have hundos.

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 8:23am

I work in a retail location for my company and we get the $50 and $100 coming through all the time. They do not smell like maple syrup, some customers insist they do but I think they must be sniffing something else first....
And they are incredibly difficult to start a rip, but once there's a little tear they rip apart so easily! One of my girls had a bill fall apart in her hands. Also once they are creased they never go back to the same flatness ever again.

As odd as it sounds, we need to be more like Africa. Their currency is quickly becoming a virtual currency. Basically evolving from the trading of cell phone minutes.

We could make half dollar bills and quarter dollars..

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 4:26am

it's done because in advertising $__.99 mentally seems a lot cheaper than just a 'rounded to' dollar. also, in the end with taxes, it ends up being over the dollar anyway. it's silly, but whatevs.

By the time coins are eliminated we will probably use our phones to buy gumballs.
